Active Gloucestershire launches summer campaign to help people get active in their local communities
Building on the success of last year’s Great Gloucestershire Stroll and Roll, residents are encouraged to rediscover the benefits of moving more outdoors
Active Gloucestershire is calling on people across the county to get active in their local communities this summer, with a renewed focus on making it easier for everyone to move more in ways that suit them.
Building on the success of last year’s Great Gloucestershire Stroll and Roll, the campaign celebrates the wealth of outdoor spaces across the county — from parks and canals to town trails and countryside routes — encouraging residents to explore what’s on their doorstep.
The initiative highlights opportunities in every district, helping people find accessible, welcoming places to walk, wheel, roll or simply spend time outdoors, no matter their age, ability or starting point.
The campaign aims to remove barriers to physical activity by focusing on simple, everyday ways to move more, close to home and at a pace that feels achievable.
Last year’s Stroll and Roll campaign demonstrated how inclusive outdoor activity can be, inviting people to take part in ways that worked for them, whether that was a gentle walk, using mobility aids, or exploring new routes with friends and family.
This summer, Active Gloucestershire is working with local media brand, So Glos, to build on that momentum by shining a spotlight on a diverse range of locations across Gloucester, Cheltenham, Tewkesbury, Stroud, the Forest of Dean and the Cotswolds – helping people feel confident to get started.
As well as physical health benefits, the campaign emphasises the positive impact that being active outdoors can have on mental wellbeing.
Spending time in green spaces and moving more regularly is linked to reduced stress, improved mood and increased feelings of connection — particularly when activities are shared with others or enjoyed in local, familiar environments.
By encouraging people to step outside and incorporate movement into their daily lives, Active Gloucestershire hopes to support healthier, happier communities across the county.
Kirsty Dunleavy Harris, CEO at Active Gloucestershire, said:
“We know that being active outdoors can have a hugely positive impact, not just on our physical health, but our mental health too.
This campaign is about helping people see that opportunity is all around them – in their neighbourhoods, their local parks and the spaces they pass every day.
You don’t need special equipment or lots of time. Small steps really do make a difference, and we want everyone in Gloucestershire to feel supported to find a way to move that works for them.”
Active Gloucestershire continues to work with local partners, community groups and organisations to create more opportunities for people to be active in ways that are inclusive, accessible and sustainable.
By highlighting a wide variety of locations and activities across the county, the campaign aims to inspire more people to take that first step – and to build lasting habits that support both physical and mental wellbeing.
