School Games

The School Games aims to make a positive and meaningful difference to the lives of children and young people through sport and physical activity. In Gloucestershire the programme is delivered by Active Gloucestershire and five School Games Organisers. The programme advocates for innovative, co-designed, co-led activities and is committed to engaging with children who do less than 30 minutes of physical activity a day.

Our role is to help consider the county’s strategic approach to the School Games, supporting the development of the national priorities to:

  1. Tackle inequalities, to increase participation of schools from the most underserved communities
  2. Ensure physical literacy and positive experiences are created and promoted for children and young people
  3. Embed youth engagement to enhance the principle of ‘by young people, for young people’.

These pledges aim to address the national priorities of tackling inequalities, youth engagement, and physical literacy through the School Games

School Games Organisers

The School Games Organisers support schools in their areas by providing physical activity opportunities for those who are less active, and facing barriers such as gender, special educational needs, low income and ethnic diversity.

Every school has access to a School Games Organiser who can support them with providing opportunities for students to be active within school as well as outside activities and events

Your School Games Organiser can support your school to:

  • Prioritise the delivery of the Chief Medical Officer’s recommended 60 active minutes a day, or 20 minutes a day for students with Special Educational Needs (SEND).
  • Provide opportunities for children and young people facing barriers to being physically active such as those from low socio-economic backgrounds, minority ethnic groups, SEND students and girls.
  • Provide opportunities for secondary aged students and students transitioning from key stage 2 to 3
  • Delivering opportunities for high quality leadership and youth engagement.
  • Encouraging engagement from local stakeholders including senior leadership teams, Public Health and parents.
