Disabled People

Active Lives Adult Survey data shows disabled people are almost twice as likely to be physically inactive compared with non-disabled people.

In Gloucestershire we are working hard to reduce the participation gap between disabled and non-disabled people. We recognise that it’s important to understand the ‘person’ and differing circumstances, barriers and motivations for different audiences when it comes to enabling people to move more.

Despite 3 in 4 disabled people telling us that they want to be more physically active, a complex mix of factors and inequalities increase the impact of barriers that people face. Research shows that the majority of disabled people want to be more active but are prevented by the barriers they face in society.

Whether confidence, cost, trusted sources of advice, access, or even just knowing where to go; all of these things impact on the opportunities available to people and the capabilities people have to explore them.

Just four in 10 (40%) disabled people feel like they are given the opportunity to be as active as they would like.

  • We’re making progress but we still have more to do to close the participation gap.

The latest Active Lives data for Gloucestershire gives us an insight in the difference in inactivity rates for disabled and non-disabled people:

We work together with a number of partners, organisations and communities to consider how we can improve access to inclusive opportunities in our county and inspire a diverse range of people to make small changes to their own practices to benefit all.
