We can move aims to increase physical activity through a whole-systems approach. Operating in a complex environment, to grow the movement and increase physical activity, it requires efforts at individual, community and systems levels.
The we can move approach, also know as our Theory of Change, is broken down into four key components:
System Working
Driving Change Through System-Level Efforts
Understanding Dynamics: Grasp how organisations and individuals function at local and national levels
Building Trust: Foster relationships based on trust to support positive-decision-making
Leadership & Advocacy: Promote leadership and advocacy across organisations and sectors to develop shared goals
Collective Action
Harnessing Community Strengths:
Community Activism: Inspire community activism to drive positive changes
Collaborative Efforts: Encourage collective action by discovering and collaborating around shared values
Place-based Approach: Utilise a strengths, people and place-based approach through the we can move movement
Behavioural Change
Supporting Individual Transformation
Behaviour Change Models: Implement theories of behavioural change, such as COM-B model
Individual Focus: Concentrate on individuals while recognising broader system inequalities that influence their behaviour
Strength-based Approach: Work with individuals’ strengths, focusing on “what is strong, not what is wrong”
Learning is Adapting
Continuous Improvement Through Learning:
Evaluation Integration: Embed evaluation from the beginning of initiatives
Adaptability: Adjust to extraordinary circumstances
Understanding Failures: Be prepared to make mistakes and understand the reasons behind them
